Fresh oil is amber and translucent. Oil that looks black and gritty on the dipstick — or reads low — is overdue. Pull the dipstick and look; it takes ten seconds.
Old oil loses its protective film. More engine noise, a tick at startup, or a rougher idle can all mean the oil is no longer protecting the moving parts it is supposed to coat.
An oil-life monitor near zero or a maintenance light is the car doing the math for you. Resetting the light without changing the oil protects nothing.
