A transmission rarely fails without warning. Weeks or months before it gives up, it starts sending signals — small changes in how your car shifts, sounds, and smells. Catch them early and the fix is often simple. Ignore them, and a minor repair can turn into a full rebuild. Here are the seven signs we tell our own customers to never brush off.

A pause before the car drops into Drive or Reverse, or shifts that feel like a kick instead of a glide. Modern transmissions should be nearly invisible — if you can feel every shift, something has changed.
Whining that changes with speed, humming, buzzing, or a clunk when the car shifts. Transmissions are quiet machines; new sounds mean worn parts or low, dirty fluid.
Overheated transmission fluid smells sharp and burnt — very different from engine oil. Heat is the number one killer of automatic transmissions, and Valley summers on the 405 and 101 are brutal on fluid.
Transmission fluid is red or pink (dark brown when it's old). Puddles near the middle of the car usually mean a leaking seal, line, or pan gasket. Low fluid is what turns small problems into big ones.
A shake or shudder as the car picks up speed — often between 30 and 50 mph — can point to a worn torque converter. It feels like driving over a rumble strip when the road is perfectly smooth.
The check engine light covers transmission faults too — codes in the P0700 range are transmission-related. And if the car suddenly refuses to shift past one gear, that's limp mode: the car protecting itself. Believe it.
Slipping can also come from low fluid, a failing sensor, or even engine problems that feel like shifting trouble. That's exactly why diagnosis comes before any repair quote — guessing wrong gets expensive.
A transmission that slips is wearing itself out a little more with every mile. Metal particles from worn clutches circulate in the fluid and damage healthy parts that were fine a month ago. In practice, the cars we see early often need a fluid service, a seal, or a sensor. The cars that arrive on a tow truck need a rebuild. Same warning signs — very different bills.
There is no safe number. Some cars limp along for weeks; others fail the same day. Slipping gets worse, never better — and driving on it can turn a service into a rebuild. Have it checked as soon as you notice it.
Bright red and translucent, with a slightly sweet smell. Dark brown or black fluid that smells burnt has been overheated and is no longer protecting the transmission.
Many manufacturers suggest every 30,000–60,000 miles, but stop-and-go Valley driving and summer heat argue for the shorter end. Your owner's manual has the exact interval for your car — and we can check the fluid's condition today.
Yes. The transmission reports to the same computer, and codes from P0700 upward are transmission faults. A light plus any shifting change deserves a proper scan, not a guess.
