Thanksgiving — Thursday, November 26 this year — is the busiest driving weekend in America. A breakdown on the 405 or the 101 doesn't just ruin dinner; it can strand your family for hours. Run through this checklist about a week before you leave, and you'll know your car is ready for the miles.

Most holiday breakdowns come from a short list of neglected basics: tires, batteries, belts, and fluids. These ten checks catch nearly all of them — and most take minutes, not hours.
Underinflated tires run hot on long freeway drives and are the number-one cause of blowouts. Check pressure (including the spare) against the sticker inside the driver's door — not the number on the tire itself. Look for worn tread, cracks, or bulges. If your steering pulls or vibrates at speed, have your tires and alignment looked at before the trip, not after.
Holiday traffic means hours of stop-and-go. Squeaking, grinding, a soft pedal, or a longer stopping distance are all signs your brakes need attention now. Brakes are the one system you never gamble with on a loaded car full of family.
A battery that "still starts fine" in your driveway can die at a rest stop two hours from home. If yours is more than three years old, get it tested — a load test takes minutes and tells you the truth. Corroded terminals and slow cranking are early warnings. Read more about battery service and the signs of a weak battery.
Long drives at freeway speed are hard work for old oil. If you're close to your service interval, do the oil change before the trip, not after — fresh oil protects the engine for the whole drive and one less thing hangs over the holiday.
Coolant does double duty: it keeps the engine from overheating on the Grapevine climb and feeds the cabin heater on a cold desert night. Check the level in the reservoir and look for leaks under the car. A sweet smell or a puddle of green, orange, or pink fluid means a cooling system check is overdue.
Top off windshield washer fluid (you'll use more than you think), check power steering and transmission fluid where your car allows it, and confirm the brake fluid isn't dark or low — low brake fluid can mean worn pads or a leak.
Walk around the car at dusk: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards. Then test the wipers — late November rain in Southern California is common, and a streaking wiper at night on the freeway is a genuine hazard. Both are cheap, fast fixes.
A snapped serpentine belt takes out your power steering, alternator, and water pump in one second. Look for cracks, fraying, or a shiny glazed surface, and squeeze hoses — they should feel firm, not mushy or brittle. If you hear squealing on start-up, that's the belt asking for help.
Yes, even in November. Your defroster uses the A/C system to clear fogged windows, and a car full of passengers fogs up fast. If your windows clear slowly or the air isn't cold, an A/C check before the trip is worth it.
Even a well-maintained car can get a flat. Pack jumper cables or a jump pack, a flashlight, a phone charger, water, a basic tool kit, and a reflective triangle. Check that your jack and lug wrench are actually in the trunk — you'd be surprised how often they aren't.
The single best road-trip tip we can give you: check the car about a week before you leave. A worn tire or a weak battery found on Tuesday is a simple fix. The same problem found Wednesday night before a Thursday drive means competing with every other procrastinator in the Valley — if a shop can take you at all. Book your pre-trip check early, drive out relaxed, and spend Thanksgiving thinking about turkey instead of tow trucks.
Not sure whether something you noticed is serious? Bring it in — a proper maintenance inspection or diagnostic check now is always cheaper than a breakdown on the road.
Most pre-trip inspections take about an hour, depending on what we find. Call ahead and we'll schedule you so you're not waiting around — we're open Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM.
We don't recommend it. Many causes are minor, but some — a failing sensor that affects fuel mixture, for example — get worse under sustained freeway load. A quick diagnostic scan tells you whether it's a "fix it in January" issue or a "fix it before you leave" one.
Call us anyway. The critical five — tires, brakes, battery, oil, coolant — can be checked quickly, and if something needs fixing, knowing before you load the car beats finding out on the shoulder of the 5.
Trusted Auto Care is at 7530 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys — minutes from the 405 and the 101. Book your pre-trip check today and make the only surprise this Thanksgiving a good one.
